B'nai B'rith Student-Athlete Award

Student-Athlete Award Dinner and Presentation
Monday, May 15, 2023
Clovis Veterans Memorial Building
6:30 PM

In 1951, a small group of B'nai B'rith members from the Fresno Chapter conceived the concept of an Annual Student-Athlete Award.  This idea was discussed with local school officials and the local clergy, and all the interested parties felt that such an award would go a long way towards promoting brotherhood among the various religious groups in our community.  It was also felt that this award would give our high schools the opportunity to showcase the importance of combining athletic skills with academic excellence.  This event is to honor the student-athletes and their families for all of the hard work and dedication required to accomplish all they have done.  This year marks the 69th anniversary of the Student-Athlete Award Dinner.

Four high schools originally participated and a $100.00 scholarship award was presented to the winner.  Today our event involves sixteen high schools.  Each nominee receives a $500.00 scholarship and the overall winner receives $2,500.00 which is to be used to further his or her education.  Although there can be only one overall "winner" each year, each student nominated is a success story.

Each nominee is evaluated on his or her athletic ability (65%), scholastic ability (25%), and school and community activities (10%).  Only sports the student completes in grades 10-12 are evaluated.  Student transcripts are submitted to the Admission Office at California State University, Fresno for evaluation of the student's grade point average as if that student was applying for admission to the university.
